Granite vs. Marble Headstones: Which material is right for your memorial?

granite vs marble headstones

Choosing a headstone is one of the most personal decisions a family will ever make. Beyond the design, the inscription, and the emblems — the material you choose will determine how that memorial looks and holds up for generations. Two options come up more than any other: granite and marble.

Both are natural stones with long histories in memorialization. Both can be beautifully crafted. But they are not the same — and understanding the differences can help you make a choice you'll feel confident about for years to come.

At Abby Rose Inc., we've been guiding NJ and PA families through this decision for over 25 years. Here's what we tell them.

What makes granite the most popular headstone material?

Granite has become the standard in modern memorial design — and for good reason. It's one of the hardest natural stones on earth, which means it resists weathering, moisture, and moss far better than softer alternatives.

In New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where winters can be harsh and humidity runs high for much of the year, granite's density makes it especially well-suited. A granite headstone placed in a Trenton or Burlington County cemetery today will look nearly the same a century from now.

Granite also holds engraving exceptionally well. Whether you choose sandblasting for bold, deep lettering or fine etching for a portrait or detailed image, the stone's hardness keeps those details crisp over time — not just for years, but for decades.

From a color standpoint, granite offers remarkable variety: Jet black, Classic grey, Deep green, Warm red, and many shades in between. This makes it easy to match the aesthetic of a specific cemetery or honor a family's personal style. You can explore the full range of colors available at Abby Rose on our colors and materials page.

Best for: families looking for maximum durability, detailed engravings, and long-term value.

When does marble make sense for a memorial?

Marble carries a timeless elegance that granite simply doesn't replicate. Its soft white or cream tones, the way light moves across its surface — there's a reason marble has been used in monuments, sculptures, and sacred architecture for thousands of years.

If the memorial will be placed in a traditional cemetery with an older, classical aesthetic, or if a family has a strong preference for white stone, marble is a genuinely beautiful choice.

That said, marble is a softer, more porous stone. Over time — particularly in outdoor environments — it will weather. Letters can become harder to read. Surfaces may darken or develop a patina. Some families appreciate this organic aging; others find it distressing when they visit years later.

In the Mid-Atlantic climate of NJ and PA, marble requires more attention and care over time than granite. Acid rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and biological growth affect marble more noticeably. It's not a poor choice — but it's one to make with open eyes.

Best for: traditional cemetery settings, families drawn to a classic white aesthetic, pre-need memorials where the visual character of aged stone is part of the appeal.

Comparing granite and marble side by side

Here's a straightforward breakdown to help frame the decision:

Granite

Marble

Durability

Excellent — resists weathering very well

Moderate — softens and weathers over decades

Engraving quality

Outstanding — holds detail long-term

Good initially — can fade with weathering

Color options

Wide range (black, gray, green, red, blue, pink)

Primarily white, cream, and gray tones

Maintenance

Very low

Moderate — may need periodic cleaning

Cost

Moderate to high depending on type

Often comparable; rare varieties can cost more

NJ/PA climate suitability

Excellent

Fair — more susceptible to freeze-thaw damage

Aesthetic

Modern, clean, versatile

Classical, elegant, traditional

There's no universally "better" material — only the one that's right for your family, your loved one, and the cemetery where the memorial will stand.
